After suffering a 5-0 loss to Virginia High this week the Lady Trojans went on to win against Lebanon 4-3. The Pinoneers led 3-0 after the fourth inning but the Lady Trojans came back in the end, scoring four runs in the bottom of the seventh to steal the win. The Lady Trojans are now 10-2 overall for the season and 3-1 in the Clinch Mountain District. Battle will play in Gate City tonight with the first pitch set for 7 p.m.

After three seemingly easy wins, the Fort Chiswell Pioneers were given a reality check this past Friday night as the Chilhowie Warriors pounded the Fort 35-7 in a non-district football game played at Chilhowie.

The Fort Chiswell Lady Pioneers used a strong fourth quarter to defeat the George Wythe Lady Maroons 78-72 in a non-district girls’ basketball game played Friday night at the Fort.
Although George Wythe Tennis Coach Rob Shelton lost the top four players from last year’s team that won the district and finished runner-up in the region, he won’t get a lot of sympathy from too many other teams.
The George Wythe varsity softball team has played well during its early season games and Head Coach Bobby Bandrimer has relied on several returning players to provide the spark.
The George Wythe Maroons won their seventh consecutive Hogoheegee District boys’ basketball tournament by thumping Chilhowie 97-40 Friday night at Marion Senior High School.The Maroons had already wrapped up a berth in the regionals by winning the regular season title with a 10-0 mark after dominating the other district teams. GW improved to 22-2 with the win and will host a first round game tonight at 7 p.m. against Patrick Henry.
A late basket by Chilhowie broke a tie score and gave the Lady Warriors a 55-53 win over the George Wythe Lady Maroons in the Hogoheegee District girls’ basketball championship game Friday night at Marion Senior High School.
The Hogoheegee District and Mountain Empire District boys’ and girls’ basketball tournaments continue throughout this week.Both districts’ girls’ tourneys began Monday night. The Fort Chiswell and George Wythe girls’ teams both received byes to the semifinal round.
Chilhowie led throughout in beating George Wythe 59-44 Friday at Marion in a playoff between the teams that tied for first place in the Hogoheegee District girls’ basketball standings.The Lady Warriors used aggressive defense to create turnovers and received four three-pointers from senior Emily Doane, who totaled a team-high 22 points.Junior Ashley Buckhannon tallied a game-high 26 points for the Maroons, but the Warriors held GW post player Lacey Price to four points. Price had a big game when the Maroons beat the Warriors in their meeting at GW.

Rural Retreat couldn’t handle Northwood’s full-court pressure as the Panthers kept the Indians winless in boys’ basketball play Friday.The game was close for a little over a quarter before the home team took advantage of turnovers and pulled away. Northwood went on to capture a 69-43 Hogoheegee District victory.The Panthers honored their six seniors at their last regular-season game, and three of them responded with double-figure scoring nights. Chris Robinson led the way with 17 points, with Zach Roberts supplying 15 and StevenEarly Spence 11.
The George Wythe varsity basketball team has six seniors, five juniors and three sophomores on its roster and all 14 players scored as the Maroons traveled to Chilhowie Friday night and avenged last season’s loss by dominating the Warriors 97-56 in a showdown for the Hogoheegee District’s top spot.
If there were any doubts about which team would win after the first quarter, they were dashed by halftime. The George Wythe Maroons led by 22 points at the half and then coasted to a 101-51 victory over the Northwood Panthers in a Hogoheegee District boys’ basketball game played Friday night at GWHS.
Chris Scott of George Wythe was one of the top honorees among the All-Hogoheegee District golf team.

Seth White scored the go-ahead touchdown with only one second left in the game to give the George Wythe Maroons a 14-7 victory over the Chilhowie Warriors Friday night at Pendleton Field.The victory also allowed the Maroons to clinch the Hogoheegee District championship. GW finishes its regular season at 5-0 in the district and 9-1 overall. The Maroons automatically earn a berth in the Region C, Division 2 playoffs.
The Rural Retreat Indians improved their record to 6-1 Friday night by routing the Northwood Panthers 59-7 in a Hogoheegee District football game played at Community Stadium.The win also allowed the Indians to remain tied for first place in the district with George Wythe and Chilhowie, all with 2-0 district slates.
Northwood was the top team in a cross country meet held Wednesday afternoon at Rural Retreat Lake.The Northwood girls’ team defeated Bland 27-49. The Northwood boys’ team also had the low score of 29 compared to Fort Chiswell with 69 and Bland County with 83. In addition to Rural Retreat, Fort Chiswell and Bland County, also competing in the meet were runners from Chilhowie.
The Fort Chiswell Pioneer football team traveled to Saltville on Friday night as they battled the Northwood Panthers.The Panthers celebrated their homecoming with a victory as they defeated the Pioneers 35-19.
This Saturday night at the high banked, half mile dirt super speedway of Wythe Raceway it will be Ladies Night with the first 3,000 Ladies admitted free in the Grandstands!This will be the first Ladies Night at Wythe Raceway and the stands are expected to be full as the ladies get treated to an entire program of racing action headlined with the Exit 54 Exxon Late Model Division.
The lead was no place to be on Saturday night during the Carolina Clash Super Late Model Series race on the high banked, half mile dirt super speedway of Wythe Raceway.
Kenny Peeples, Jr. of Rural Retreat had been preparing all week for the $2,000 to win FASTRAK Racing Series event at Wythe Raceway, but on Friday evening with the forecast for Saturday being 70 percent chance of rain, the speedway decided to move the FASTRAK Southern Series race to next Saturday night, Aug. 4, to help eliminate the possibility of the series regulars traveling from as far away as Alabama and not getting to race.
A former Wytheville resident stopped by the area recently to grab a handful of gold before heading back to California.
