A 29-year-old Max Meadows man was taken into custody early Tuesday morning after a short standoff with members of the Wythe County Sheriff’s Office. Thorin Allen David Moulder of 181 Cox Lane was charged with assault and battery of a family member and brandishing a firearm.

School bus No. 26, carrying approximately 19 students, was making a left-hand turn onto Jewell Lane, when Lisa Litteral of Galax, driving a silver Toyota Celica, attempted to pass the bus on the driver’s side. She faces charges of reckless driving, said 1st Sgt. Kevin McCall of the Virginia State Police.

The Wythe County Board of Supervisors is giving the Speedwell Volunteer Fire Department three months to raise its membership to 20 members, the minimum under state law. According to the law, if a fire department has less than 20 members for three consecutive months, it can be shut down.
