The Washington County School Board has narrowed its options for the next superintendent down to two candidates, Lee Brannon and Eleanor Smalley.
No stranger to the community, Brannon served as assistant superintendent in Washington County for two years. Currently, he is Wythe County’s schools chief. Prior to taking the job in Wythe County, Brannon served as superintendent at Norton City schools for three years.
Smalley is currently senior project director for the Darden/Curry Partnership for Leaders in Education at the University of Virginia; however, she too has an extensive background in school leadership. Along with working for the National Geographic Society, Smalley served 12 years as Clarke County school superintendent.
“Washington County is an excellent school system,” Smalley said. “The academic success of your students is excellent. You also have a lovely community with a great board that’s looking to continue the path of excellence.”
Smalley said that good schools and good communities are inextricably linked. She described herself as a supporter of a diverse education.
“The opportunity for children to learn in multiple ways is essential,” she said. “I believe in well-rounded education: academically, athletically, musically. I’m a strong supporter of all the extra-curricular activities children can participate in.”
That means technology must be incorporated, she said.
“We live in a changing and growing world so education is extremely vital for the future of our children, communities and the well-being of the whole country.”
Smalley said Washington County is a unique spot because it is growing and attracting new businesses while maintaining its rural character and natural beauty.
“It is definitely one of the most beautiful counties in the state,” she said. “We have a 6-year-old daughter, and we want to be part of a community as she grows up. (Washington County) is a special place for people to grow up.”
Smalley praised Washington County’s academic record, not only in K-12, but in the opportunities presented through Virginia Highlands Community College and Emory & Henry College.
Asked about how she will deal with the tough economic times for the school system, Smalley said she plans to start the budget process early and solicit a lot of community discussion.
“It’s a matter of setting priorities, maintaining those priorities and looking for opportunities to seek outside funding,” she said. “I have a great deal of experience in looking at outside resources and grants, both in the public and private sector. I have experience developing resources and finding resources. I have a strong record in student achievement. I will bring a wealth of background experience to the job and high energy and enthusiasm.”
Washington County is now a leading school district in the state, but in 10 years Smalley said she sees it as a leading school district in the nation and world. She hopes to be leading that leading school district.
“Being part of a school system is a long-term commitment,” she said. “One of the reasons to live in Washington County is to live in Washington County and be part of the community and be there for a long time. It’s about family, community and students learning.”
Washington County School Board chair Elizabeth Lowe said she’s looking forward to having a new superintendent.
“Both of these people are well-qualified and will make excellent superintendents,” Lowe said.
Brannon declined comment on his candidacy, citing his employment in Wythe County.
A Washington County School Board meeting is scheduled for Thursday at 6 p.m. at the School Board Office. The board will convene and then go immediately into closed session to discuss candidates for superintendent.
