Six schools received money Monday from the Food City School Bucks program that contributes a percentage of purchases by participating customers to schools of their choice.
The presentations from the Marion store represent contributions from the program that ran from September 2009 to April 2010. Across the regional retail grocery chain, schools can receive a total of up to $600,000.
“When a customer uses their Value Card, the customer can say what school the percentage goes to,” said Marion Store Manager Tim Burress.
Company president and CEO Steven C. Smith said in a letter to recipients that the chain has pledged $600,000 again. “We’re committed to giving back to the communities we operate in and we take the education of our youth very seriously,” Smith wrote. “School Bucks is an easy, cost effective way for area schools to gain the dollars they need to purchase vital educational equipment and tools.”
Receiving checks were Marion Intermediate, Atkins Elementary, Marion Primary, Sugar Grove Combined, Marion Middle and Smyth Career and Technology Center. Burress said the schools received more than $4,000 in total.
The Chilhowie store will make its presentations at a future date, Burress said.
The 2010-11 program will run from Sept. 12 to April 23, he said.
Marion Primary teacher Beth Graham urged store customers to “re-link” their shopping cards to schools by telling cashiers at the start of the program which schools they want Food City to support.
Burress anticipated that, as in the past, customers can ask that multiple schools benefit from their purchases.
