Assistant Saltville Town Manager Edward T. “Eddie” Asbury Jr. died Monday after a short battle with cancer.
Asbury came to the administrative post in September, 2008, said Steve Johnson, who was then town manager before moving to the clerk-treasurer position last year. Asbury, previously a wastewater plant operator, had not worked since July when his health declined, according to Johnson.
Asbury’s obituary said he was a retired U.S. Air Force major. Johnson attributed Asbury’s evident grasp of town issues at the management level to his military background that was “very structured, very regimented. He carried that over into his job performance.”
Johnson remembered Asbury Tuesday as “an animal lover. He had a bunch of pets, dogs and cats. Any time you saw him in the truck when he was not working, his black lab Zoe was in the back.”
Johnson said Asbury had cared for his mother during her own illness.
Asbury is survived by his wife, Joyce Asbury; son Eddie Trey Asbury of Texas; daughter Tina Blevins of Saltville; brother Mark Asbury of Charlottesville; sisters Debbie Ogle of Marion and Lori Carter of Chilhowie; and three grandchildren, Eli, Luke and Sonya, his obituary said.
Funeral services will be conducted at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 3, at Henderson Funeral Home with the Rev. Don Petty officiating. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of choice, the obituary said.
