Alleged theft of mail involving a Marion post office employee was not substantiated by an investigation of the United State Postal Service Office of Inspector General, an agency spokesman said Friday.
Cleveland, Ohio-based OIG Special Agent Scott Balfour said Friday afternoon said his agency did receive an allegation of mail theft and that special agents conducted an investigation.
“They determined the allegation could not be substantiated,” Balfour said.
Last month, OIG communication director Agapi Doulaveris said, “We have received an allegation, and we are working on it.” But she would not confirm that allegation was the same as one left anonymously over a weekend at the News & Messenger office. The note, in all capital letters apparently printed by computer, said, “Mail carrier in Marion being investigated for stealing mail.”
It went on to allege the carrier “took gift cards that were to go to a fallen police officers [sic] children” and that the post office was trying to cover up the incident.
Doulaveris said the course and duration of the investigation would be determined by findings. She expected information about the probe would be publicly available after 30 days.
“All allegations are treated fairly,” she said.
