TAZEWELL – A Raven man could serve the rest of his life in prison after being convicted of robbery during a jury trial Jan. 12-13.
Shain Claude Collins, 37, was charged with robbery, use of a firearm in commission of a felony, wearing a mask in Public and breaking and entering. The jury recommended Collins receive a life sentence for the robbery, 50 years for the burglary, three years for possession of a firearm and one year for wearing a mask in public.
Judge Keary R. Williams, retired, set sentencing for March 8. The commonwealth presented evidence showing Collins robbed the Doran Grocery during the evening hours of Jan. 3, 2009.
A clerk at the store testified that a man entered the store around 10 p.m. armed with a small pistol and wearing a sheet over his head. She said the man had cut two eye-holes in the sheet.
She identified Collins as that person, saying he had been in the store several times and she recognized his voice and also recognized him by his cheek-bones. She store employees had been watching Collins because they suspected him of shop-lifting.
The clerk testified that Collins told her to give him the money and get down on the floor. She said she gave him just over $500 and waited until he had left before calling 911.
