Floyd County church collecting for Haiti relief

»  Comments | Post a Comment

Because of the chaotic situation in Haiti, where an earthquake struck last week, many American hearts and minds are touched and there is a general feeling of frustration, commented Kay Clemens of Floyd. “Many who are praying for the survivors and for the rescue of those still entrapped wish they could do more.”
The members of Floyd United Methodist Church are accepting donations in any amount to be given to UMCOR, United Methodist Committee on Relief. One hundred percent of the money given to UMCOR will go to the relief of the victims in Haiti. If you are interested in giving to this organization, make checks payable to Floyd UMC with a notation for UMCOR. The monies collected will be sent to UMCOR on January 26, 2010.
According to the United Methodist News Service Report, three executives of the UMCOR staff were dropped off at the Montana Hotel in Port-a-Prince just minutes before the earthquake struck. First reports indicated that all three were found in the hotel lobby and were safe. However, on January 15th the body of Rev. Sam Dixon, head of UMCOR, was pulled from the wreckage. One assistant of Rev. Dixon’s assistants, Clinton Rabb, head of mission volunteers, died on Sunday. Jim Gulley, another assistant and consultant with UMCOR, was rescued late Thursday, January 15th. According to spokesman Rev. Tom Hazelwood, he is in stable condition in a Miami hospital.
