As of Thursday morning, ice was “just spotty” on Floyd County roads, said Bob Beasley, resident engineer with VDOT in Hillsville. In the afternoon, however, the temperature is supposed to drop, he added, and ice is expected to form.
The weather resulted in county schools being closed. Several wrecks were also reported.
The priority for VDOT employees will be the primaries, Beasley commented. Once slick spots are treated on those roads, the workers will turn their attention to the higher volume secondaries.
VDOT came out at 4:00 a.m. this morning to start treating the ice, after a wreck on Rt. 221, Beasley said. That road got their first attention.
Beasley told the Press “a difference of two degrees will make a difference” in road conditions later today. He advised residents to take stock and look out the window and check out reports on television and radio. “It’s dancing on the edge. It could be a misty rain or turn into ice.”
