Floyd County students are scheduled to begin a new school year on Thursday, August 12. That’s a week earlier than the traditional starting date, and it might be the earliest date for the first day of school in Floyd County.
The earlier date was a request from the schools’ calendar committee, made up of parents, teachers and other staff. There was a “strong push from the high school,” explained Dr. Terry Arbogast, school superintendent, with the goal being to finish the first semester before the winter break.
New teachers for Floyd County Schools will be welcomed in an orientation session next week. Other faculty will report for work the following week.
An open house will be held at Floyd County High School on Monday, August 9, from 5 to 7 p.m. Open houses at Check, Floyd, Indian Valley, and Willis Elementary Schools will be held on Tuesday, August 10, from 4 to 7 p.m.
High school students may pick up their schedules beginning August 2 and any weekday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Eighth grade orientation will be held August 11 from 1 to 3 p.m.
Student enrollment is expected to be over 2,100, with 15-18 students more than last year, Dr. Arbogast remarked. Last year’s enrollment was up by approximately 35 students.
For the first time this year, parents will be able to access their child’s grades online through the parent portal system. They will also see if assignments are being turned in to teachers. “That’s just another piece of communication with parents so they can keep up with what’s happening,” Dr. Arbogast said.
Teachers have been putting assignments on their voice mail box. Now they are also doing their own web pages with assignments and other information posted.
This year, student lunch prices will go up 25 cents, but breakfast prices will remain unchanged.
