“It’s one of our biggest fundraisers,” Floyd County Humane Society president Kathy Poole said about Stand Up for Strays at the Floyd United Methodist Church on Saturday, July 17th. It was the first time the annual event was held at the church, where the non-profit group has been meeting twice a month since their previous meeting location at the New River Community Action Center closed for roofing repairs.
Poole, who has been a Humane Society member for seven years, said the annual event has been going on longer than that. The fund drive features a yard sale, arts and crafts booths, food vending, musical entertainment, dog grooming and tick dips, fly ball game demonstrations, children’s games and more.
The bulk of funds raised will be split between the society’s spay and neutering program and their animal foster care program, in which homeless animals and dogs taken from the pound are placed in temporary foster homes until permanent homes can be found, Poole reported. A small percentage of raised funds will go to the group’s building fund.
Poole made cat and dog biscuits and people cookies to sell at the event. Virginia Tech students also made biscuits. “Everyone involved is terrific,” Poole said about the volunteers. “It’s amazing. They come out year after year to do all this,” she added, gesturing to the activity filled church lot and grounds.
