This year’s American Cancer Society “Relay for Life” in Floyd will feature some new ideas. For one thing, rather than an all-night walk, the 2010 event, on Saturday, June 26, will end at midnight. The event will begin at 10 a.m. at Floyd County High School.
The theme is “United States of Americare.” Each Relay team was given a specific state for their individual tent site theme, explained coordinator Tracey Miller. “That means the people of Floyd can travel the entire country in one afternoon.” Represented states range from Virginia (Skyline team) to Alaska (Leap Frogs).
Another new feature at this year’s Relay is a kids’ area, which will be open throughout the event. Buy a bracelet for $10 and have fun with sand art, origami, bouncies, hula hoops and other games.
There will also be a reserved area to ride bikes, skateboards or scooters, without disturbing the walkers on the track. Candles and bags of sand will also be sold for entry in the luminary ceremony.
The mammogram unit will be set up, and there are still a few openings remaining before 2 p.m.
Most of the teams will have on-site fundraisers that range from selling candy, drinks, and bottled water to pinto beans and hot dogs. There will also be corndogs, funnel cakes, coffee, taco in a bag, potato candy, ice cream, snow cones, cookies and baked potatoes.
Other fundraisers include face painting, blinkey eye glasses, cancer bracelets, pet bandanas, necklaces, kiddie flashlights, and pokemon cards.
