Marion fire fighter Jerry Breen foams down persistent hotspots Friday morning after fire destroyed the superintendent’s house at Hungry Mother State Park. Familiar to park visitors as the home on the hill overlooking the lake just outside the park entrance, the house had been unoccupied three months since Jim and Linda Kelly moved following his retirement from the state park system. Marion Fire Department, Marion Life Saving Crew and Smyth County sheriff’s deputies responded to the approximately 2:30 a.m. Friday call and cleared it some four hours later, said fire department spokesman Ken Heath. While the exact cause of the fire is unknown, it started in an outbuilding and soon involved the nearby house, according to Heath. Damp conditions overnight kept the fire from spreading to the adjacent forested mountain.
