Bland County could have a new school superintendent by the end of September. The search has been narrowed to two candidates.
“We are looking at two candidates,” reported Roger Morehead, vice chairman of the Bland County School Board. “We expect to meet with them again. We’re definitely hoping to have someone in by the end of September.”
The search began in June when Donald Hodock announced his plans to retire as superintendent at the end of August. Since the position has not been filled, Gary Williams, principal at Rocky Gap Elementary School, was appointed acting superintendent at a called School Board meeting last week.
“I will continue as principal at Rocky Gap Elementary,” Williams stated earlier this week. “I particularly enjoy the elementary aspect. I’ve never experienced that before in my 33 years in the field of education. The kids are great and the teachers are good at what they do. The school runs smooth. I smooth out any bumps in the road.”
He is in his second year as principal at the school which has an enrollment of 250 students in grades K-7 with the county’s pre-school program on campus. Williams noted he is not a candidate for the superintendent’s job.
A Bluefield native, Williams spent more than three decades as an educator in Tazewell County before retiring in 2007. He came out of retirement in 2009 to take the Rocky Gap post.
“Everything is going well,” Williams commented. “I have great people to work with here at school and at the central office. Mr. Hodock has made himself available to me, too, if he is needed.”
“Mr. Williams was well qualified for the job of acting superintendent,” Morehead pointed out. “He told us he was not interested in being superintendent.”
