MUD FORK – Tazewell Fire Chief George Pilkins and his son were injured in an accident June 29.
Both were taken by MedFlight to Holston Valley Medical Center after the motorcycle they were riding was struck by a pickup truck. George Pilkins had surgery to fix a leg that was broken in three places.
His son suffered a broken ankle and was released from the hospital the following day. The son is expected to return to the hospital later for more surgery to repair damage to his leg. Trooper J.L. Stiltner of the Virginia State Police told another newspaper that Bruce Blevins, Jr., 19, of Bandy was driving a 1989 Chevrolet S10 pickup on Mud Fork road around 12:45 p.m. He said it appeared the pickup had been across the centerline.
The 2004 Suzuki motorcycle operated by George Pilkins and the truck were going in opposite directions and tried to pass in a curve. The two vehicles collided resulting in injuries to Pilkins and his 12-year-old son.
In addition to being fire chief in Tazewell, Pilkins is a town police officer. Police Chief Greg Layne confirmed reports that Pilkins and his son were injured in the accident. Blevins was reportedly cited for reckless driving.
