Children and parents alike gathered at the Bland County Public Library on July 7 to be entertained by magician Brad Matchett as part of the library’s “Magic 4 U” summer reading program.
Matchett’s show, called “Agricadabra,” used magic tricks to teach the children about the importance of agriculture, especially in Virginia. He has performed this show at fairs and libraries across the state for several years.
He quizzed them on the average age of the Virginia farmer (56 years old), the percentage of women farmers (14) and what kind of sound a cow makes (“mooo,” they said, although there was one indistinct “oink” in there somewhere).
Between the educational quips of his program, Matchett created balloon animals, had the children sing “Old McDonald” together and cloned a rooster.
Houdini, his magic rabbit, even escaped once during the show, almost hopping into the sea of wriggling children.
The children got to pet him as they left the room, headed to the main part of the library to check out all sorts of books about farm animals, magic and, predictably, superheroes.
