The Barter Players are rounding out the summer season with “The Reluctant Dragon,” beginning July 20 through Aug. 6. Adapted by Mary Hall Surface from the book by Kenneth Grahame with rights granted by Dramatic Publishing, the story is a classic, having been remade several times, even by Walt Disney. Produced by The Barter Players, “The Reluctant Dragon” is recommended for families and children of all ages.
Young Glaston dreams of knights battling fierce dragons. He even reads books on the subject and knows what dragons eat. So, when Glaston’s father discovers a dragon living in a cave on a mountain, Glaston expects a big, wonderful battle between the dragon and a brave knight.
But much to Glaston’s surprise, instead of a fire-breathing menace, this dragon prefers to write poetry, paint and enjoy his beautiful mountaintop view to pillaging the village.
Life is good for the dragon until the knight shows up determined to exterminate him. Reluctantly the dragon agrees to Glaston’s plan to fight the knight. Before it's all over, Glaston and the villagers of Guildemere learn that love comes in many shapes and sizes and that we should never judge by appearances.
Katy Brown, artistic director of The Barter Players believes the story of “The Reluctant Dragon” gives every child permission to be OK with who they are. “Stereotypes no longer apply. The play reminds us how similar we all are on the inside, but also how special and valuable each soul is because of our differences.”
“This production is a must-see for boys and girls of all ages. The dragon will be played by four actors, all moving together as one unit, which is really fun to watch. The story itself is action-packed, engaging, funny and wonderfully charming,” said Brown.
The Barter Players are supported by the VCA and the NEA. “We are grateful for the support of our sponsors, Blue Ridge Public Television and Alpha Natural Resources,” added Brown.
