As Trout Unlimited’s Mountain Empire Chapter President Dr. Eric Sacknoff looked on, Paul York helped Marion Intermediate School students release small trout they raised in the classroom into the Holston River Middle Fork near Holston Hills Country Club Friday morning.
Sacknoff said Trout in the Classroom is an excellent introduction to the realities of science whose outcomes do not always follow expectations. Technical issues and a resulting loss of fish prompted a restart of the program during the year, teaching the students about adapting and proceeding to overcome setbacks. They also learned the discipline of keeping records documenting their work, a key component of research.
A second release for Chilhowie Middle School students’ trout was held Friday afternoon on the Holston’s South Fork at Riverside.
