Taylor Crockett Awarded WCC Scholarship
On May 25, during the Senior Awards Assembly at Rural Retreat High School, Taylor Crockett, daughter of Debra Crockett, was awarded a WCC College Board Scholarship to Wytheville Community College for the 2011-2012 academic year.
The scholarship award was made by Dr. Lorri Huffard, dean of the Science & Health Technologies Division at WCC.
The WCC College Board Scholarships, 14 overall for the entire service region of the college, pay the fall semester tuition and student activity fee at WCC for the recipients, who have distinguished themselves by their academic records.
The WCC Board of the college, representing the five-county and one-city service region, approved the scholarship program 33 years ago.
Three students were also recognized for their achievements in general subject areas and were awarded $50 savings bonds by Huffard.
Recipients of the Academic Excellence Awards were Brittney Eversole for math/science, Hannah Hadaway for humanities/social sciences, and Sheyenne Cleveland for vocational/technical subjects.
The savings bonds were made available by the WCC Educational Foundation, a nonprofit, charitable organization dedicated to providing scholarship assistance to students and promoting services and activities which benefit the college and entire WCC Community. Sponsored by the Foundation since 1993, the saving bond awards recognize outstanding high school scholars annually.

Tyler Cardwell Awarded WCC Scholarship
On May 31, during the Senior Awards Assembly at Fort Chiswell High School, Tyler Cardwell, son of Christine Monahan and Michael Cardwell, was awarded WCC Board Scholarships to Wytheville Community College for the 2011-2012 academic year. The scholarship award was made by WCC Board member Howard Manley.

John Evans Graduates from Tulane University
Tulane University awarded degrees this month to approximately 2,300 graduates. John C. Evans of Rural Retreat graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree during the commencement ceremony for 2011 held May 12 held in News Orleans Ernest N. Morial Convention Center. Featured keynote speaker was Thomas Friedman. Honorary degree recipients were Cokie Roberts, Stevie Wonder and Nobel Laureate Walter Gilbert.

Local Students Named Old Dominion University’s Dean’s List
Wythe County residents Pamela Saul, Brittany Lambert, Cherie Shillig, Janet Miller and Jennifer White were named to the Old Dominion University Dean’s List for spring 2011.
Students on the Dean’s List must be taking at least 12 credit hours and have a GPA of 3.40 or higher. All five students are taking classes toward baccalaureate degrees at Old Dominion University’s distance learning site at Wytheville Community College.
Distance Learning students earn baccalaureate degrees from Old Dominion University by completing their first two years of course work at Wytheville Community College. Old Dominion at Wytheville Community College then provides remaining course work required to complete the bachelor’s degree. In addition to 22 bachelor’s degree programs, Old Dominion also offers 19 graduate (master’s, doctoral and post-undergrad licensure) degrees through Distance Learning.

Local Students Named to King College Dean's List
King College is pleased to announce students in traditional and professional studies undergraduate programs who received academic honors for the spring 2011 semester.
The King College Dean's List recognizes students taking at least 12 hours of academic work and attaining a semester grade point average within the range of 3.50 to 3.99. Student's who take at least 12 hours of academic work and achieve a perfect 4.0 semester grade point average are honored on the President's List.
For the fall 2011 semester, 764 students were honored with 268 named to the College's President's List and 496 to the Dean's List.
