A big boost from Alpha Natural Resources and its workers put the United Way of Russell and Washington Counties two within striking distance of its $1.2 million goal.
Alpha and its employees have pledged $190,000 so far this campaign season, besting its goal of $115,000, according to Burke Vander Lind, Alpha’s 2011 campaign chairman.
The donation makes up 16 percent of the United Way’s goal. The organization is now 70 percent to the $1.2 million mark, having raised $840,000.
"These campaign results are truly amazing. Our employees are helping United Way do that much more for our neighbors in need in this area. They should be very proud," Vander Lind said.
Dr. Theresa Emory, the United Way’s campaign chair said growing needs in the community have the organization calling on those who can give to give more than ever before.
“The United Way network of programs and services is the best way to help those in need in our community,” she said. “We hope to reach our financial goal of $1.2 million, but more importantly, we are driven to meet the needs of our struggling families.”
Aside from Alpha, employee campaigns are ongoing at Utility Trailer, Food City, Universal Fibers, Russell County Medical Center and Johnston Memorial Hospital.
