This year is an odd-year, or “off-year,” election, so next Tuesday’s General Election will focus on state and local offices. Some seats for Supervisor and School Board and constitutional offices are being decided by voters, as well as races in the state General Assembly.
The only contested race for a constitutional office is Sheriff. Incumbent Republican Shannon Zeman is challenged by independents Laura A. Reinhard Sparks and Paul Hill.
There is only one candidate in the other contests for constitutional offices: Independent Stephanie Murray Shortt, Commonwealth’s Attorney; Republican Lisa Baker, Commissioner of the Revenue; and Missy Keith, Republican, Treasurer.
The Board of Supervisors has a single Republican candidate in each of three districts: Lauren Yoder, Copper Hill; Virgel Allen, Little River; and Joe Turman, Burks Fork. All school board and town council candidates are independents. School Board races include: David Cartwright, Jesse Lawrence, Jr., and Clay Link, Copper Hill; Henry McDaniel and David Sulzen, Little River; and Margaret Hubbard, Burks Fork.
For Town Council, there are three candidates for two seats: Michael Patton, Ross Miller, and Dennis Wagner.
For Soil and Water Conservation Director, Skyline District, there are two independents for two seats: Jack Lawson and Curtis Sowers.
The redrawn 19th Virginia Senate seat has Republican Ralph Smith challenged by independent Brandon Bell. The redrawn 7th Delegate district has only Republican Nick Rush on the ballot.
Polls will be open from 6 a.m. until 7 p.m.
About 600 voters were placed in another voting district by redistricting based on the 2010 Census. New voter cards were recently mailed to all voters.
