Construction of a parking deck being built in Marion in partnership by the town and Smyth County could be under way in November if the county supervisors accept the apparent low bid for the work.
County Engineer Scott Simpson announced South End Construction of Roanoke as the apparent low bidder before a tiny gathering, made up mainly of construction firm representatives, that witnessed the opening and reading of the bids just after the 2 p.m. Thursday deadline for their submission.
Earlier in the day, Simpson said work could begin as early as Nov. 1 “depending on how promptly the contracts come together.” He said the job is expected to take about six months to complete, although “winter weather could play a big part in the schedule.”
Marion voted Monday to make Strother Street one-way between Church and Chestnut streets, adjacent to the deck site, during construction. The temporary change needed no public hearing and would east traffic past the work that will extend to the street’s right of way.
