Wardell man crashes into police cruiser

Police search hours for vehicle

TAZEWELL – A Wardell man was flown to Bristol Regional Medical Center after an early morning crash on Main Street Feb. 4.

Trooper Frank Farthing of the Virginia State Police said Jonathan Lowe, 39 was east bound on Main Street at 1:10 a.m. in a Dodge pickup. He lost control of the vehicle and crossed the center line striking a patrol car from the Tazewell Police Department.

The patrol car was driven by Sgt. Jeff Cole was west bound and the truck struck the rear quarter panel. Lowe’s vehicle continued east before striking a wall on the right hand side of the road, crossing the road again and going down an embankment 50 feet or more.

Farthing said officers said officers searched for the vehicle several hours before locating it.

He said Lowe was flown to Bristol Regional Medical Center where he was treated and released later in the day. He said charges are pending completion of the investigation.   

Interim Tazewell Police Chief W.L Barrett said Cole was not injured and has returned to work. He said there was minor damage to the cruiser.
