From staff reports

A 91-year-old Wytheville woman was killed on Monday afternoon in a single-vehicle crash on East Spring Street.

According to the Wytheville Police Department, Ruth B. Staley apparently lost control of her 2001 Toyota Camry after leaving the Carter Bank and Trust drive-through at approximately 1:30 p.m.

Her vehicle traveled east on Spring Street and hit a utility pole.

Staley was ejected from the car and sustained fatal injuries, police said.

Sgt. Chris Irvin is investigating the crash.

In an unrelated two-vehicle wreck on Friday morning, a Wytheville man was charged with failing to obey a red traffic light.

According to the WPD, 22-year-old Jared E. Arnold was driving a 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt north on Fourth Street at 9:13 a.m. when his vehicle struck a 2002 Ford Windstar Wagon operated by 31-year-old Amanda G. Umberger of Wytheville.

The collision, which occurred at Fourth Street’s intersection with West Ridge Road, caused the Windstar to roll over onto its top. Umberger sustained some injuries and was taken to Wythe County Community Hospital, police said.

Officer L. Altizer investigated.
