Smyth County will participate in upgrades to Chilhowie’s wastewater treatment plant following a vote last week by the county’s board of supervisors.
The county benefits from the town’s plant that treats wastewater not just for businesses and residents in the town but outside the corporate limits as well.
County Engineer and Assistant County Administrator Scott Simpson told the supervisors the county owns 25 percent of the plant and participates in capital projects there.
Likewise, the county participates at a 17.65 percent level with Marion in its wastewater treatment plant, Simpson said.
Chilhowie Town Manager Bill Boswell told his council in January the town was approved for a $1 million Virginia Clean Water Revolving Loan to upgrade sludge handling facilities and build a new laboratory on the site.
The council voted to accept the loan and proceed with the project.
Boswell said the improvements will involve a sludge storage building, a conveyor, and a dewatering press. The modern lab will allow for in-house testing of the treatment plant’s processes.
Smyth County’s portion of the project will be $250,000.
“Chilhowie let us know this future expense,” Simpson said before the supervisors voted to participate.
