Smyth County’s treasurer can now fix some mistakes without getting the board of supervisors to approve the fixes.
The board voted last week to adopt a resolution authorizing the treasurer “to approve and issue refunds of erroneously assessed taxes as approved by the Commissioner of Revenue, in an amount not to exceed $1,000, without the prior approval by the Board of Supervisors.”
The moved was a recommendation of the supervisors’ budget committee.
County Attorney Heather Pritts told the committee the board adopted a similar resolution in February 2011 “allowing the treasurer to approve and issue any tax refund up to $250,” according to a report of that meeting.
According to Pritts, the state code allows governing bodies to allow treasurers to refund up to $2,500 without prior approval.
