A call to assist Emergency Medical Services led to a drug bust and confiscation of 3,000 pills Jan. 12.
Tazewell Police Chief Greg Layne said Officers Mark Nash and Shannon Dickenson were called to a home on Ben Bolt Avenue after EMS crews responded to a call of a possible drug overdose. Nash noticed a male resident acting suspicious and begun questioning him.
The investigation led Nash to obtain a search warrant for the home. Nash and Dickenson assisted by Patrolman John Caldwell and Investigator Darren Jesse recovered several pills, pill bottles and drug paraphernalia.
Later in the evening officers received information that there were more drugs at the home and obtained another search warrant and recovered more pills and drug paraphernalia and $700 in cash.
The officers arrested Chad Baker and charged him with obstruction of justice, possession of narcotics and possession with intent to distribute narcotics. Layne said most of the pills have been identified as hydrocodone.
He said his believe the pills may been taken in a break in at a pharmacy in Buchanan County. Layne said a conservative street value for the pills would be $30,000.
Baker is being held in the Southwest Regional Jail in Tazewell without bond. Layne said some of the drugs have been sent to the state laboratory for identification.
He said the woman EMS was called for died later in the evening at Carilion Tazewell community Hospital.
