Tazewell Police chief resigns

Layne heading to Sheriff's office

»  Comments | Post a Comment

Just weeks after learning their town manager will be retiring, Tazewell is seeking a new police chief.

Town Manager Jerry Wood confirmed Jan. 17 that Greg Layne had submitted his resignation. Wood said Layne submitted his letter Jan. 16 and the resignation will be effective Jan. 31.

The town manager said he expects to name an interim chief within a week and will begin advertising the position. Making the matter a little more complicated is the fact Lt. Darren Jessee has asked to be reassigned to duties as a patrolman.

Layne said he will be moving to the Tazewell County Sheriff’s Office to become an investigator.   “I’m going back to what I love,’ he said. Layne said he liked catching the bad guys and the detective job would allow him to do that.
