The block of Marion’s Catron Street between West Chilhowie Street and Prescott Avenue will be closed through at least Wednesday following development of a sinkhole beneath Catron Street Tuesday afternoon.

Public Works Director Jackie Perry said the sinkhole, perhaps 20 feet deep and 10 feet wide beneath the small surface opening, is attributable to the presence of caverns in the limestone hill and will be filled with gravel and an affected sewer line replaced. Residents along the closed portion of Catron will be able to reach and leave their homes during the closure. Others will need to take alternate routes.
